What is Stephen Ministry?

Stephen Ministry is an inter-denominational Christian ministry (www.stephenministry.org) offered in churches throughout the world and designed to provide emotional and spiritual support to both men and women facing a variety of life challenges. Stephen Ministers have completed extensive training [50 hours] in providing emotional and spiritual care for people who are experiencing personal difficulties. These lay ministers work directly under the supervision of trained leaders, serve for at least two years and receive continuing education.

How does Stephen Ministry work?

Trained, caring lay ministers will meet with you at no charge one-on-one for whatever length of time is needed to help you through the challenges you’re now facing.  A Stephen Minister is not a professional counselor, psychologist, psychiatrist or social worker but rather someone who follows Christ’s instruction to “love one another as I have loved you.” John 13:24.

Who might need a Stephen Minister?

Anyone experiencing a loss, whether it’s from the loss of a loved one, a separation, or a job, would benefit from meeting with a Stephen Minister. Those dealing with major changes as in a marriage, retirement, a physical move, physical health, or victimization could receive care that would help them during these challenges. People who suffer from depression, loneliness, a terminal illness, or a financial setback would also benefit. Caregivers who need extra support would find godly counsel and a listening ear.

What can I expect from a Stephen Minister?

Whatever you share with your Stephen Minister, please know that information will go no further. Confidentiality is mandatory in this care ministry. Also you can expect weekly one-hour meetings with a Stephen Minister who offers a listening ear with godly counsel, prayer, and encouragement.

What is the essence of Stephen Ministry?

If you look at the Stephen Ministry logo, you will see a cross with two people, one fractured behind the cross and one in front of it. This symbolizes that we all are broken people and that it is through the cross of Jesus that we are made whole.
